270 Lives: A Turnaround Campaign Cocktail Party

It is always nice to revisit  Rouge Tomate at 10 East 60th Street for a worthy cause, an event benefit Harlem Prep – a K-5 charter school on 123rd and Second Avenue.

The diverse crowd enjoyed constantly passed fine hor d’oeurves and cocktails in the neat downstairs setting.  It was nice to see Mayor Bloomberg, despite his busy schedule, attended the event and was pleased with the progress of the organization. He is a big supporter of the charter school.

The funds provided the fine support and results that Democracy Prep School has achieved like outperforming other charter network as reflected in NYC Chancellor’s Progress Report Scores(2007-2011).  This is remarkable given that many of students come from low income households, less than $15,000 and some from homeless families.

I liked that the organization was willing to meet at workplace with their lunch and learn about the program.

After 10 years in operation, the school was due to be shut by SUNY this past fall and the students sent back into the traditional public education system. Since they took over, they were able to turn things around where 80% of the students could not read and write.
